In the Press: Curbed House of the Day

Modern Bauhaus masterpiece by Marcel Breuer”

This year marks the 100-year celebration of Bauhaus, the influential German design school launched by modernist Walter Gropius. It’s fitting, therefore, that a home by legendary Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer would hit the market.

The just-listed three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath masterpiece is located in Litchfield County, Connecticut and called Gagarin I (1956-1957). Nestled into the hillside on a 1.7-acre lot, the two-story home features bluestone terraces, original stone walls, sun-shading overhangs, and a cantilevered staircase that leads to a reflection pool.

Inside, the main level boasts a 35 foot by 52 foot glass-walled living room that looks out onto a bluestone rock deck. The focal point of the room is a bush-hammered concrete fireplace, while across the open space is a colorful kitchen. The angled entrance area, the hallway leading to the master bedroom wing, and a part of the living room are paved with brick; the rest of the flooring is reclaimed teakwood.

Other amenities include textured Portuguese cork ceilings, a gas fireplace in the master bedroom, a glass-walled sitting room, and a floating staircase with a parapet of abstract geometric cutouts. Original details abound, from the expansive glass sliders on Torx bearings to the built-in shelving.

Celebrate the Bauhaus 100-year birthday with a splurge present; 144 Gallows Lane is on the market now for $3,800,000.
